COHERENT'S LIGHTSHEERTM DIODE LASER RECEIVES FDA CLEARANCE FOR PERMANENT HAIR
REDUCTION
Long-Term Clinical Study Highlights Diode Technology Efficacy
SANTA CLARA, CA (April 19, 1999) - Coherent, Inc. today announced that
the LightSheerTM Diode Laser System received clearance from the U.S. Food &
Drug Adminstration to claim that it achieves "permanent hair
reduction." This is the first such clearance to be granted to the new
generation of diode laser technology.
According to the FDA "permanent hair reduction" is defined as the
long-term stable reduction in the number of hairs regrowing after a treatment
regime. The LightSheer Diode demonstrated this capability in a long-term mltlti-center
clinical study. The study showed that the number of regrowing hairs following
treatment with the LightSheer Diode were stable over a time greater than the
duration of the complete growth cycle of hair follicles, which varies from 4-12
months according to body location. "We've been looking forward to sharing
this information with the medical community for some time now ," said Ken
Witte of Coherent, Inc. "Now, doctors can use the compelling findings of
our research when they talk to patients who want the benefit of permanent hair
reduction provided by the most advanced technology available today."
"The new FDA clearance is significant because it's the first time that a
laser system has been shown to produce permanent hair reduction in a very
reliable way," said R. Rox Anderson, M.D., noted researcher in the field of
laser hair removal and Associate Professor of Dermatology at Harvard Medical
School, Massachusetts General Hospital.
The LightSheer Diode Laser was first introduced in 1998, and has earned a

versions based on their individual hair removal practices: the LightSheer SP and
