Beware of UVA rays

More and more consumers understand the high risks of sun exposure and are adopting healthier habits. However, too few know how to choose a product which offers a real protection against the full range of UV’s. The SPF (sun protection factor) is generally used to choose the level of protection required. This indicator does not reveal everything. It does not provide any inclination as to the protection against UVA rays. It is important to note that these rays are as damageable to the skin as the UVBs except that their effects are only visible on long term. It is only a few years later that the damages appear: deep wrinkles, pigment spots, weakened elasticity. The UVAs are also partly responsible for skin cancer. For these reasons, it is highly important to pay attention and to carefully protect ourselves. Now it is possible to check the severity of sun damage that your skin has received over the years.  With our ultraviolet imaging technology, we can detect skin pigment and textural abnormalities caused by sun damage that may not be detected by the naked eye.

With the treatment programs available at Physician's Skin Solutions, we can help to restore your skin to its healthy state.  The results achieved by our treatments and medically prescribed products are remarkable.

At Physician's Skin Solutions, we educate our patients on the care necessary to minimize sun exposure, and provide physician prescribed treatments that produce real results!

Interesting Facts and Tips

  • Skin damage is cumulative. Small amounts of sun exposure combine to damage the skin.  More than 50% of lifetime damage occurs during youth.
  • The suns rays are strongest between the hours of 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Try to minimize sun exposure especially during this time. Sunlight is reflected off surfaces such as sand, water, concrete and snow, increasing its effect.
  • Protect your children by setting a good example, since children copy those around them. Wear sunglasses, hats that shade the face and cover the neck and ears, and wear clothing that covers the body, arms and legs.
  • Always apply a daily UV broad-spectrum sunscreen 20 minutes before you go out outdoors. Even on cloudy days UV rays penetrate to damage your skin.  When doing activities that cause heavy perspiration, reapply sunscreen after 2 hours as sunscreen can wear off in these instances.
