Botox Q & A

by Pamela J. Stuart, MD

What is Botox?

Botox is a purified form of botulinum toxin that’s FDA-approved for treating moderate and severe facial wrinkles. A small amount of Botox is injected into muscles, causing them to relax and stop contracting, which diminishes the wrinkles caused by the muscles.

Dr. Stuart also uses Dysport®, which is another botulinum toxin injection that has a slightly different chemical structure than Botox. Dysport works the same way as Botox, but it may be preferred for certain areas of your face because of possible differences in the way it spreads after it’s injected.

Botox and Dysport provide effective yet subtle and natural-looking results because they’re precisely targeted to selected facial muscles, which leaves the rest of your facial muscles free to show expressions. The results of both products are temporary, lasting about 4-6 months, so you may decide to repeat the treatment down the road.

What age-related wrinkles are diminished by Botox and Dysport?

Botulinum-based treatments are used to minimize crow’s feet in the corners of eyes, frown lines that appear between the eyes, and horizontal lines that create furrows across the forehead. They may also be used to lift eyebrows and to decrease the appearance of dimpled skin on the chin.

All of these wrinkles develop over time from repeated muscle contractions that pull the skin and underlying tissue to create facial expressions. Over time, the muscle action plus the natural loss of skin strength and elasticity produce deep creases.

What can you expect during and after treatment?

The injection process generally takes about 10 minutes and is well tolerated, but it may vary for each person. During your consultation, Dr. Stuart will explain the procedure and discuss whether you’ll want a numbing treatment. You’ll see an improvement in the targeted wrinkles in about 3-10 days, but the total effect is visible in 10-14 days.

You don’t need to plan for any recovery time following a Botox or Dysport treatment. Dr. Stuart will give you any special facial care instructions to follow; otherwise, you can get back to your normal daily routine as soon as the procedure is finished.

If you want to achieve a natural, more youthful appearance without surgery, Dr. Stuart’s experience and expertise in the structure and function of facial muscles are what you need to ensure optimal results. If you’re dissatisfied with the appearance of moderate to deep wrinkles, don’t hesitate to contact Physician’s Skin Solutions to schedule a consultation to discuss Botox.
